The Sleeping Beauty
One of the final classes at Northwestern is a class called Toy Theatre we take in the fall. We are responsible for the creation and execution of an 8 minute piece of our own choosing. In the process of smaller projects, I discovered that I was going to tell the story of Sleeping Beauty. The Disney movie was one of the first pieces of cinema I ever saw and the artwork, story, and fairytale quality has stuck with me and influenced me ever since. Doing further research on the story and inspired by Lotte Reiniger's shadow puppet films of the 30's, I eventually chose to do the piece in shadow puppetry. This was my first time using the artform, which brought my love of drawing, animation, and theatre into one medium. Below is the 8 Minute piece set to the music of Tchaikovsky's Ballet of the same story, I focused on the Christening and the arrival of the Dark Fairy and using my point of view to tell the story of the fate of the child between the forces of Good and Evil, between the Lilac Fairy and the Wicked Fairy. The puppets were hand cut by me, puppeteered by classmates Kelsy Ervi, Meeka Postman, and yours truly. Photos of the event by Justin Barbin.
